SeaTraceNet will foster the collaboration among experts from different areas, whose interests centre on a diverse range of aspects pertaining to seafood traceability and labelling, with the ultimate aim of promoting a transparent seafood supply throughout the EU, ensuring sustainability of European marine resources.
The long-term goals of the network are to:
- Connect European expertise in a range of seafood authenticity testing techniques and ensure a high level of collaboration and data sharing among stakeholders and practitioners.
- Exchange ideas, know-how and expertise on the development, testing and implementation of new tools and standardised testing approaches for the verification of seafood labels.
- Ensure that EU laboratories and authorities have access to an active and strong network of well-informed experts that can provide advice on state-of-the-art testing protocols for the verification of seafood authenticity, thereby instilling confidence in seafood market operations.
- Disseminate the existence of available tools and future innovations to detect mislabelling and seafood fraud.
- Foster the cooperation among public, private and industry laboratories concerned with seafood authenticity testing.
- Raise awareness of stakeholders and consumers about the need for a sustainable production of the seafood marketed in the EU.
- Become an important transnational network on seafood traceability, labelling and authentication, with presence of the network members in policy and technical committees.
